The anterior cruciate ligament is one of the most commonly injured knee ligaments (ACL). ACL injuries are more common in high-risk sports such as basketball, football, skiing, and soccer. Half of all ACL injuries are associated with the meniscus, articular cartilage, or other ligament damage. Patients may also have bruises beneath the cartilage surface on the bone. These can be seen on an MRI scan and may indicate articular cartilage injury. Non-contact mechanisms are thought to cause the majority of ACL injuries, with direct contact with another player or object accounting for a smaller percentage. Deceleration is frequently associated with injury mechanisms when combined with cutting, pivoting, or sidestepping maneuvers, awkward landings, or out-of-control play.
